Vision
A vision statement is a compelling description of the change we want to create in the world
Success criteria for an effective vision statement:
• Positive, inspiring and aspirational
• Written in the present tense, as if it has already been achieved
• Relevant to the work that you do
• Short and memorable
• Begins with a noun, not a verb
• About the future you are working to create, rather than your role in creating it
• Does not need to be achievable in the time frame of the strategy – it is a statement of the ideal world you are aspiring to create
Mission
A mission statement describes an MA’s distinct role in achieving its vision
Success criteria for an effective mission statement:
• Begins with a verb, not a noun
• Verbs describe the role you play (for IPPF: ‘lead, provide, enable, champion’).
• Describes what (for IPPF: ‘civil society movement / services / rights’) and who (for IPPF: ‘all, especially the underserved’).
Values
Values are the fundamental beliefs; the guiding principles that define our behaviour and actions
To develop values:
•Brainstorm a list of values – the fundamental principles that define what you do, what you don’t do and how you do your work. Focus just on the ‘headings’
•Narrow the list down to a critical few (5-7) values
•Write a sentence that describes the value and gives it meaning
